CMI Radiology

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is used to evaluate a wide variety of structures or functions within the body. Common exams assess the abdomen (including gallbladder and kidney), pelvis, male and female reproductive systems, and thyroid.

In addition to visualizing structure, the color duplex ultrasound system used at CMI is able to capture real-time motion images, allowing the Radiologists to evaluate blood flow, particularly the veins in the legs or the carotids in the neck. Using a special Doppler technique, ultrasound can also capture moving blood images of large blood vessels, such as the aorta.

Perhaps the most exciting ultrasound performed at CMI is the Pregnancy Ultrasound.  Each day we are able to provide some of the first pictures of a parent’s new baby. The 4D imaging capabilities of the ultrasound system can produce (with the baby’s cooperation) a remarkably clear image of the baby’s face; 4D imaging is usually performed at least 22 weeks of the pregnancy.

PATIENT PREPARATION FOR ULTRASOUND

Please adhere to following instructions for a successful Ultrasound:

  • Abdomen or Gallbladder – do not eat or drink eight (8) hours prior to exam time
  • Pelvis or Pregnancy – full urinary bladder required; do not empty bladder one (1) hour prior to exam time; drink 32 ounces of water one (1) prior to exam
  • All other exams – no special preparation required
  • Wear warm, comfortable clothing (preferably without metal snaps or zippers)
  • Do not wear jewelry

WHAT TO EXPECT

You may be asked to change clothing; scrubs or gowns are provided. In most cases, you will be asked to lie down on the imaging table; some special exams may require you to stand.

Once comfortably positioned, the technologist will move a handheld device, called a probe or transducer, on the skin surface in the area of interest. A warmed gel is applied to the skin or probe to enable the transmission of the sound waves into the body.

For pelvic ultrasounds, a specialized internal probe may be used. The technologist will explain the exam thoroughly and will work with you to make you as comfortable as possible during this type of exam.

Exam times average 30-60 minutes, depending on the type of exam ordered.

After the exam is completed, you may resume normal activities in regards to diet, exercise and medications.

The images will be evaluated by the Radiologist and a complete report sent to the ordering physician; your physician will review the results with you.
