CMI Radiology

X-Ray

X-Rays are especially useful in the detection of disease or injury in the bones, but are also very useful for finding disease in soft tissue. Most notable examples include the common chest X-Ray to reveal pneumonia, lung cancer or pulmonary edema or the abdomen X-Ray to look for intestinal blockage, free air or free fluid.

PATIENT PREPARATION FOR X-RAY

Please adhere to following instructions for a successful X-Ray:

  • Take medications as prescribed
  • Eat/drink normally
  • Notify your physician if you are pregnant
  • Wear warm, comfortable clothing (preferably without metal snaps or zippers)
  • Do not wear jewelry

WHAT TO EXPECT

You may be asked to change clothing; scrubs or gowns are provided.

Depending on the area of interest, the technologist will position you for the exam – you may be asked to stand, sit or lie down. Please notify the technologist of any limitations you may have, such as inability to stand unassisted for at least 5 minutes.

Once positioned, you will be asked to hold very still. You may be asked to hold your breath. It is very important to follow the instructions of the technologist throughout the exam.

Typical X-Ray exam times are 10-30 minutes; if multiple X-Rays are ordered, it may take longer. The technologist will attempt to provide an estimate of the total test time for you.

The images will be evaluated by the Radiologist and a complete report sent to the ordering physician; your physician will review the results with you.
